People are always wondering, “Why do all those Christians speak in tongues?” No, it’s not just to irritate my non-tongue talking friends…I’m just joking! But seriously, have you ever asked yourself that question? Have you ever wondered, “Why should I pray in tongues?” The first thing I can think to tell you is that speaking in tongues gives the Holy Spirit access to your life. And when the Holy Spirit has access to your life, His definitive purpose is to bring the fullness of God’s glory into your circumstance. He is here to change your gaze, not in your natural eyes, but the eyes of your spirit. And that means when you speak in tongues the priorities of your heart are changed to be in unity with the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:12-16) And that is just the beginning…
When we speak in tongues we are speaking directly to God in a REAL language unknown to us, inspired and directed by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 14:2 (paraphrased)
You need to be getting fluent in your first language. You should be more fluent in your heavenly language than you are in your earthly language. You should make it a practice to pray in tongues every day. That’s part of the reason I wear a watch; every time the hand passes a new hour, I am reminded to pray in tongues. And what does that produce for me? It produces a constant communication with my Heavenly Father. And the best part about it is that no one else can understand it. That means the devil can’t understand it either. When you speak in tongues you not only get to speak to God but you get to irritate the devil at the same time. So next time the devil tries to interrupt your life, don’t let him get another word in. Start speaking in tongues.
We need to realize just how vital this is. Paul did. Look at what he wrote in 1 Corinthians 14:18:
“I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all.”
Do you want to know how you can live more in the supernatural? Here’s the answer: empower yourself by praying in the Holy Spirit. That is how you will live a life filled with the Holy Spirit. The bible says that we shall receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon us. (Acts 1:8) Guess what? The only thing the Holy Spirit cannot do is NOTHING. Therefore it is impossible for the Holy Spirit to come upon you and you not have a POWER MOMENT. Red bull has nothing on the Holy Spirit. You want an energy drink? DRINK FROM THE WELL THAT NEVER RUNS DRY! This isn’t just a one-time fling. You can have this every day when you speak in tongues. That is why every time Jesus preached it was from a place called FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND POWER.
But here is the issue: We have been spending all of our time trying to explain the Holy Spirit instead of EXPLORING the Holy Spirit. We need to make it as simple as the man in John 9:25 put it: “ALL I KNOW IS ONCE I WAS BLIND, BUT NOW I SEE”. So don’t let your mind make prayer a complicated thing. God is saying take a break from talking and let me talk through you for a while. This is actually a sign of what a true believer looks like:
“And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in NEW TONGUES…”
Mark 16:17
See, speaking in tongues is not just going to change your gaze, your spiritual eye’s. It is going to change your position. When we speak in tongues God puts into us wisdom, truth, and understanding about spiritual things and even natural things! (2 Corinthians 2:6-7) That includes business affairs, new inventions, and witty ideas. That is why the bible says when you don’t know how to pray… pray in tongues (Romans 8:26)!
Praying in the Holy Spirit is a major key to functioning in the will of God correctly.
So why should you pray in tongues? Every time you speak tongues there is an accomplishment in it. When you speak in tongues you open up your life for God to get involved. And here is the best part: He wants to get involved more than we want Him to. So how about we make it a little easier on Him. Start your spiritual engines: speak in tongues, and CHARGE!
